Identity

Who am I supposed to be?

Who are we really and where does our identity come from?

Our identity can too often be characterized by what influences us in the media – we must be beautiful, thin, muscular, wealthy… a perceived perfection that is so unattainable! There will always be something new we must achieve in order to gain our worth.

Self worth equates differently to different people.  To some it’s a prestigious job or outward beauty… to others, significance means having a partner or having children who need you and rely on you. Now these things may contribute to our value but…

WHO ARE WE WITHOUT THOSE THINGS?

That ultimately is the real question…if you were to strip everything away – all your comforts and securities, where would your sense of value and worth be found… in the things you have acquired during your lifetime, or in God?  Does your identity come from Christ or from the things of this world?

“…for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” (Luke 12:15 NKJ)

Our possessions, bank balances, where we live, or our careers do not give us our true identity. Finding out who we are in Christ – how He values us and loves us; HIS view and purpose for our lives – this is what truly shapes our WHOLE identity.

“and you are complete in Him…” (Col.2:10)

For myself, it is a continuous effort everyday to see God’s view of me.  It’s difficult to avoid all the distractions and influence of the world and the teachings of the day.  I don’t exactly know all of who I am in Christ yet, but I do know that I am loved, forgiven, destined, blessed, cleansed and whole IN HIM!  That gives me great satisfaction and great comfort!
