The Beauty in Trying

In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good. Ecclesiastes 11:6

This verse has stayed with me for a while now.

It’s the practicality of it that I like – it gives me something to do – and I like to have something to do – especially when I’m not sure what to do. When I’m looking for something to change or there’s a little bit of a mountain to move.  So prayer prayed – I throw a few things at it – put some seed in the ground. Try what I know and then what I don’t know – sow this way and that, to the right and to the left or over my shoulder with my eyes clamped shut.

Without some seed in the ground, – without trying, – there’s nothing to grow.

Not even a whiff of a chance unless I throw that seed and let it land. No chance at all unless I give it a go – my best shot, my near miss, a girl throw. Even if I’m afraid or unsure or doubtful and maybe all three.  I can still try.

“Anything worth doing is worth doing even though it might not work” Seth Godin

No guarantees – except God with me. Like sowing seed as the evening draws in when you can’t see clearly and the edges fade – – – nearly impossible to see where the seed is landing, whether it’s found soft good soil or hard rocky ground – – – but the seed is still sown and it’s still good in itself.  Time to rest and the rest is God’s.

Ours to sow and God’s to grow.

And there’s something in the sowing and trying and in the continuing to try that’s valuable all on it’s own – there’s faith in there and hope and not giving in and trust and bravery. It say’s I haven’t given up on winning, it says I haven’t given up on dreaming.

Aren’t our trying and asking and a looking and a longing for God?  We give Him our seed and look for His goodness to find us – to break through the soil and surprise us with its beauty. We pray our prayer, we offer Him our earthbound doing and trying and ask Him to make it good, to hit it with heaven and make something of it.

“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7:7 NLT

Love to you all today
